Egyptian Forum for Sustainable Development Vice-President of the Mediterranean Committee for Sustainable Development

A new regional step taken by the Egyptian Forum for Sustainable Development successfully, as the Egyptian Forum for Sustainable Development was elected Vice-President of the Mediterranean Committee for Sustainable Development for a period of two years, during the first day of the 19th meeting of the Mediterranean Committee, currently held virtually from 7-9 June 2021.

It is worth noting that the Mediterranean Committee for Sustainable Development (MCSD) was established in 1995, under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Program / Mediterranean Action Plan, in accordance with Article 4 of the Barcelona Convention as an advisory body to the Contracting Parties to assist them in their efforts to make environmental issues part of their social and economic programs and promote sustainable development policies in the Mediterranean region and countries.

The Committee is considered a forum for exchanging experiences and learning from peers, which includes 22 members representing governments, and 18 members of stakeholders concerned from various categories such as representatives of local authorities, civil society organizations, social and economic actors, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), the scientific community and parliamentarians.

The Committee is particularly responsible for supervising and coordinating the activation of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development as a strategic framework document for all stakeholders and partners to translate the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals it includes at the regional, sub-regional, national and local levels, and works to support the implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development through the United Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan – Barcelona Convention System, especially through the work of the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development (MCSD). At the national level, this achievement is considered an important step in representing Egyptian civil society in this important Mediterranean Commission, which will greatly contribute to transferring and exchanging experiences at the national and regional levels and will have a powerful influence in determining and arranging our national priorities within the framework of the participatory vision with the national bodies concerned with the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan. In his speech at the opening session, Dr. Emad El-Din Adly expressed his thanks for the confidence of the Committee members in electing the Egyptian Forum for Sustainable Development as Vice President as a representative of non-governmental organizations and stressed the role that the Forum will play at the national level in Egypt and at the regional level through the network of national forums for sustainable development in the Arab countries overlooking the Mediterranean.
