Local Sustainable Development Forums Launch a Series of Consultative Meetings on the TeraMed Initiative

The Local Sustainable Development Forums in Egypt have launched a series of expanded consultative meetings to support the implementation of the TeraMed Initiative, which aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and promote pathways for a just and sustainable energy transition across the Mediterranean region.

This step comes within the framework of the project “Strategic Advocacy for Renewable Energy in Egypt,” implemented at the national level by the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED), in cooperation with the European Climate Foundation and funded by the Partnership for International Energy, as part of integrated efforts to support clean energy policies in Egypt.

The project focuses on promoting the use of renewable energy sources, integrating decentralized energy solutions into national energy strategies, and advancing green finance mechanisms. These efforts contribute to shaping a unified national vision that supports a just and sustainable transition toward clean energy.

The partnership with the Local Sustainable Development Forums falls within this broader framework. These forums were established in 2023 under an initiative by the Arab Office for Youth and Environment, following Egypt’s hosting of the COP-27, with the aim of strengthening local dialogue on sustainable development issues.

Through these consultative meetings, the forums seek to achieve several key objectives, foremost among them raising awareness of the TeraMed Initiative and its mechanisms for local implementation, promoting its integration into governorate-level development policies, and fostering dialogue among key stakeholders. These include relevant government entities in the energy sector, civil society organizations, the private sector, media representatives, as well as youth and women representatives, alongside experts and academics.

The meetings also aim to develop a clear vision of the main opportunities and challenges facing the expansion of renewable energy, while proposing practical, actionable solutions. Emphasis is placed on the role of local forums in following up on the outcomes of these dialogues and ensuring the sustainability of their implementation at the national level.

To broaden participation and maximize impact, the consultative meetings will be organized across several key governorates. The Egyptian Sustainable Development Forum (ESDF) will host representatives from the Cairo, Giza, Qalyubia, and Menoufia forums. Meanwhile, the Beheira Local Forum will host representatives from Gharbia, Kafr El-Sheikh, Alexandria, and Matrouh. The Port Said Local Forum will convene representatives from Ismailia, Suez, and North and South Sinai. The Beni Suef Local Forum will host representatives from Fayoum, Assiut, and Minya, while the Qena Local Forum will bring together representatives from Luxor, Aswan, the Red Sea, and Sohag.

These efforts reflect a growing direction toward building an inclusive national platform that brings together diverse actors in the energy and development sectors. This, in turn, enhances prospects for achieving a just and sustainable energy transition, while supporting Egypt’s commitments to environmental and development goals at both the regional and international levels.
